It's hard for me to think of my photography as creation rather than documentation--but that's a change I would like to make. It's always been for me a way of snatching at visual moments I want to preserve, and as such it's chronically inadequate. The process involves change, and I want to get at those changes, to make them a part of what I am doing when I take a picture. I want to be thinking as well as looking. I like the surprises that come out of my camera, and occasionally they approach what I thought I was seeing as I took the picture, but I know I can do better. It seems to me that a heightened consciousness of how I take photographs would contribute to, not detract from, my ability to see in detail what I'm looking at. Because that's what it comes down to, right? A more thorough, constantly reinvented, way of looking.
