There are parts of our lives that occur privately, sans show or fuss. Maybe less so now that we're all self-promoters. I'm trying to cultivate them for myself. Up till now my only secluded part has been my conception of myself as an artist and writer. I can do that every day, and think of myself that way all the time, and no one can tell me any different. How is that different from a career or a family or an athletic self, and why can't I conceive of those parts of me with more objectivity? Are there people out there sure of their identity in every domain?
