On writing

"He would be a very simple person (...) who should leave in writing or receive in writing any art under the idea that the written word would be intelligible or certain ... "

- Thamos (the God) as mentioned by Socrates (the character) in Phaedrus (the book) by Plato.

Taken of course not from the book itself but from an email quoting it, by which I and others fall into the trap.

"...hearers of many things and will have learned nothing; they will appear to be omniscient and will generally know nothing..." (ibid.)
